Have you heard of the Sound Box?

The Sound Box is a venue in San Francisco, CA, US, owned by the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra and the San Francisco Opera. It used to be a rehearsal room until, in 2013, it turned into something completely different.

Every room has its challenges and every performance is different from another. Cinema, for example, requires very dry rooms to provide intelligibility, around 0.5 seconds reverb time. On the other hand, a choir usually sounds better in a church were the reverb times exceed 2.5 seconds. A good classic symphony hall will have around 1 to 1.5 second reverb.

What about making it possible to have all the spaces in one? Like a sound Photoshop? The answer is Meyer Constellation.

The space, which was quite cavernous, was fitted with the crown jewel of Meyer Sound, the Constellation.

And what's the Constellation?

Well, the Constellation is a sound system like no other. It's a state of the art sound system that can emulate the acoustics of any room and reproduce them in any other room.

With speakers, microphones and a powerful computer based algorithm (VRAS- Variable Room Acoustic System), the system analyses the acoustic response of the room and changes it, playing back into the room what was found to be missing.

One of the good examples is the Comal restaurant in downtown Berkley. The majority of restaurants sound bright and the conversations turn into a chaos very easily. The Constellation enables the place to sound rich and not dry or dull preventing this chaos at the same time. It does that taking away the Early Reflections and playing back the reverb of the room ambience. It's like the blurred background of a picture.

The Sound Box is a really innovative space, powered by this brilliant technology.

It is mix between a bar and a space for experimental sound. Some say that Sound Box is a clever idea from the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra to reach the youngest generations, but I believe that it's much more than that.

With all the Meyer Constellation processing power it's the right place to experiment new ideas. Isn't that what the future is about?

Já ouviram falar da Sound Box?

A Sound Box é um local de espectáculos em São Francisco, Estados Unidos, que pertence à San Francisco Symphony Orchestra e à San Francisco Opera. O espaço foi usado como sala de ensaios até que, em 2013 se tornou em algo completamente diferente.

Cada sala ten os seus desafios e cada espectáculo é diferente do outro. O cinema, por exemplo, precisa de salas muito secas para reproduzir com inteligibilidade, cerca de 0.5 segundos de tempo de reverberação. No lado oposto da escala, um coro soa muito melhor numa igreja onde as reverberações excedem os 2.5 segundos. Um boa sala para música clássica precisa de entre 1 a 1.5 segundos de reverberação.

Nesse espaço, que era bastante cavernoso, foi instalada a jóia da coroa da Meyer Sound, a Constellation.

E o que é a Constellation?

Bem, a Constellation é um sistema de som diferente de todos os outros. É um sistema topo de gama que consegue emular as condições acústicas de qualquer sala e reproduzi-las em qualquer outra sala.

Constituído por altifalantes, microfones, e um poderoso algoritmo de processamento computorizado (VRAS- Variable Room Acoustic System), o sistema analisa o comportamento acústico da sala com os microfones  e modifica-o, reproduzindo aquilo que falta através dos altifalantes.

E se conseguíssemos ter todos os espaços num só? Como ter um Photoshop sonoro? A resposta é Meyer Constellation.

Um, dos bons exemplos é o Restaurante Comal na baixa Berkley. A Constellation permite que o espaço não seja seco e árido em termos sonoros mas sim rico, sem que as conversas se tornem num caos. A Constellation consegue isso, retirando as Early Reflections do som presente e devolvendo apenas a reverberação, como que uma sonoridade "desfocada" e agradável. É como o fundo desfocado de uma fotografia.

Sound Box é um espaço extremamente inovador, tronado possível através desta brilhante tecnologia.

É uma mistura entre um Bar e um espaço para experimentação sonora. Alguns dizem que a Sound Box foi uma ideia inteligente da San Francisco Symphony Orchestra para chegar às gerações mais jovens, mas acredito que será muito mais do que isto.

Com todo o poder de processamento da Meyer Constellation é o lugar certo para experimentarmos novas ideias. E não isso que é o futuro?
