THE  DOOR SOUND OF THE BMW 4 SERIES

THUD! Wow! That really sounds expensive!

The sound engineers behind the new BMW series 4 had to work hard to find the perfect door sound for this new model.

All the sounds in a high-end car are carefully studied so that they communicate the right sensations to the costumer.

From the windshield wipers to the engine, all parts go through a lot of tests until they sound exactly like they should. And all these sounds are created to please the user.

So, what about the 4 Series door?

Because it's a sporty car, it should not sound too heavy. But it can't sound too light, either, a door is one of the basic security items of a car and we want to feel secure inside it.

There are many parts inside a car door, some smaller than others. When we close it, we cannot hear loose sounds, all has to sound as a whole.

And that's not easy at all. BMW team explains to Medium Re:form:

"The moment the door connects with the frame, the metal parts of the latch collide creating a low but audible click. A thunk follows more clearly as the dampers and seals compress, decelerating the door nearly instantly as it locks in place, deadening the sound at once to create a crisp and precise effect."

At first, things didn't work out as expected, because the high and low frequencies were out of balance, causing the door to sound a bit "thin" or too "light".

The absence of frame around the windows was causing problems to the door sound, so they had to work on the dampening the roof.

Finally, the door sounded absolutely right.

In this audio fingerprint, you can see a door that has some loose part inside, there's a rattle that shows in the upper frequencies.

O SOM DA PORTA DO BMW SÉRIE 4

THUD! Uau! Soa mesmo a caro!

Os engenheiros de som por detrás do novo BMW série 4, tiveram de trabalhar muito para encontrar o som perfeito da porta deste novo modelo.

Todos os sons num carro topo de gama são estudados cuidadosamente, de forma a comunicarem as sensações certas ao seu utilizador.

Desde os limpa-vidros ao próprio motor, todos os elementos são sujeitos a testes rigorosos até soarem exactamente como deveriam. E todos estes sons são criados para agradar ao potencial comprador.

Então, o que se passa com a porta do BMW série 4?

Dado que é um carro desportivo, a porta não deverá soar demasiado pesada. Mas também não poderá soar demasiado leve, já que a porta é um dos mais importantes elementos de segurança de um carro e nós queremos sentir-nos seguros dentro dele.

Por outro lado, há muitas peças dentro da porta de um automóvel, umas mais pequenas que outras. Quando a fechamos, não podemos ouvir sons soltos, terá de soar como um todo.

E não é nada fácil. A equipa da BMW explica à Medium Re:form:

"No momento em que a porta encaixa na moldura, as partes metálicas do fecho colidem criando um leve mas audível click. Um thunk segue-se mais claramente à medida que os amortecedores e os selos se comprimem, desacelerando a porta quase instantaneamente quando ela se imobiliza no lugar, matando o som de uma vez para criar um efeito preciso."

De início, as coisas não correram como previsto, porque as frequências altas e as baixas estavam desequilibradas, provocando um som um pouco "fino" ou demasiado "leve".

A falta de moldura à volta das janelas estava a causar problemas ao som da porta, por isso foi necessário trabalhar para amortecer o tecto.

No final, a porta soava mesmo bem!

Nesta impressão digital de audio podem observar que a porta tem algo solto lá dentro, há um chocalhar que se observa nas frequências altas.

E nesta, a porta soa demasiado oca.

A procura do som perfeito. Muito mais complicado do que se imagina!
