THE MOON, THE CONCORDE AND THE AUDIO CD

45 years ago, the longest journey man ever made 

When I was 11, man set foot on the Moon.

Then, when I was 18, Concorde started regular commercial supersonic flights.

38 years ago, 3 hours between Paris and NY

Understandably, I was seeing the future arriving at great speed and believed that, 40 years later, Man would have travelled beyond Mars or Venus and all the planes would be flying at Mach 3, at least.

Recently, I read an interview with John Travolta, who thought, when he was a kid, that, when he grew up, every man would have his own airplane. Another fool kid, like me.

But the future went in a different direction. Space filghts turned into shuttle operations close to the Earth and Concorde was grounded, replaced by bigger, more economic and much slower aircraft.

The utility factor prevailed over quality and discovery.

In 1983, I heard the first CD,  when passing by a music store. The sound clarity was amazing! And what about he depth of its silences!

30 years ago, the best commercial audio format ever

44.1 KHz at 16 bits! It was the last frontier. I believed, again, that 30 years after, this format would be completely obsolete, replaced by much better ones.

Then, in 1993, Mp3 appeared.

I was wrong, one more time.

The World had gone in that strange direction again.

Well, ok, Superaudio CD, a 24 bits format with capacity to play 5.1 files was launched, but it was a commercial flop.

Today, we can record up to 96 or even 192 KHz at 32 bits, this is still reserved to half a dozen of professional geeks.

CD is still the best commercial sound format on the marketplace and all the other formats are worse: mp3, AAC, WMA, Real Audio, etc..

But they are much more practical, transportable, storable. As the Airbus A380 is.

The World, again, went in a direction I didn’t want.

A LUA, O CONCORDE E O CD AUDIO

Há 45 anos, a viagem mais longa jamais feita pelo Homem

Quando eu tinha 11 anos, o homem foi à Lua.

Quando tinha 18, o avião supersónico Concorde iniciou as suas carreiras regulares.

Há 38 anos, 3 horas entre Paris e NY

Como é natural, vi o futuro a chegar em grande velocidade e acreditava que, 40 anos depois, o Homem já teria ido a Marte e Vénus, ou até mais longe e que todos os aviões voariam a Mach 3, pelo menos.

Li recentemente uma entrevista com o John Travolta. Ele pensava em miúdo que, quando crescesse, todas as pessoas teriam o seu avião. Outro miúdo tolo, tal como eu.

Mas, o futuro não foi nessa direcção. Os voos espaciais transformaram-se em operações perto da Terra e o Concorde foi retirado, substituído por aviões maiores, mais económicos e muito mais lentos.

O factor utilitário pesou muito mais que a qualidade e descoberta de novos limites.

Em 1983, ouvi o primeiro CD ao passar em frente de uma loja de música. Era espantosa a clareza e nitidez dos sons! E a profundidade dos silêncios!

Há 30 anos, o melhor formato comercial de audio até hoje

44.1 KHz a 16 bits! Era a última fronteira. Acreditei, nessa altura, que 30 anos depois, este formato já estaria muito ultrapassado, substituído por outros muito melhores.

Até que, em 1993, surgiu o Mp3.

Mais uma vez me tinha enganado.

O Mundo tinha ido naquela estranha direcção, outra vez. Os argumentos utilitários prevaleceram sobre os outros.

É claro que apareceu o Superaudio CD, a 24bits e com capacidade para tocar em 5.1, mas foi um flop comercial.

Hoje, podemos gravar a 96 ou até 192 KHz e a 32 bits mas isso ficou reservado a meia dúzia de experimentalistas.

O CD continua a ser a melhor referência sonora do mercado e todos os outros formatos são piores: mp3, AAC, WMA, Real Audio, etc..

Mas são muito mais práticos, transportáveis, armazenáveis, tal como o Airbus A380.

Lá foi, outra vez, o Mundo numa direcção que eu não queria.
